We don't know what happened to the former cult leader but there's clearly more to come from her. Her contact with Ballard, however, remains a secret. She concocts a scheme with Julia that allows her to sneak back into the building and conduct the healing ritual – seemingly successfully. Ballard – also known as Aceso – seems to genuinely believe that "old gods and goddesses" are at work in Brightcliffe and hopes to harness their power. We learn in ‘Midnight’ that Shasta didn’t simply vanish – she tracked down Regina Ballard, founder of the Paragon cult, and lived with her for a while. She was indeed cured, but there's more to her story than she's letting on. Now, if you've been paying attention you'll probably have clocked fairly early on that Shasta and Julia Jayne are the same person. She was also, interestingly, the original founder of the Midnight Club. Julia disappeared for a few days in 1968 and, when she returned, appeared to be completely cured of her ailments, thanks to the Five Sisters ritual. Over the course of the series, Ilonka becomes aware of Julia Jayne, a girl who, like Ilonka, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and found herself in the hospice. The epilogue that Flanagan mentioned travels thousands of years into the future, where new versions of Ilonka and Kevin are living out their happy ending together as lovers.Shasta is not her birth name. The book focuses much more on Ilonka and Kevin’s romance than the show does, even going so far as to reveal the two are cosmically linked - forever reborn in new bodies and destined to fall in love with one another again and again. “That’s as much as I can say about that.” “If you haven’t read The Midnight Club book, the epilogue of the book is very important to us,” Flanagan said when asked about the ghosts at a press conference attended by Elite Daily. But why are these phantasms so obsessed with Ilonka and Kevin, while nobody else in the hospice has ever seen them? Well, Flanagan dropped a hint that the answer to that question lies in Christopher Pike’s 1990 novel The Midnight Club, on which the series is based.
Stanton’s office suggested the ghosts are the spirits of Stanley and Vera Freelan, the founders of Brightcliffe.
The final scene of The Midnight Club Season 1 seemed to hint at the identity of the two ghosts haunting Brightcliffe Hospice, but didn’t really reveal why. Thankfully, you don’t have to wonder about them too much, though, because showrunner Mike Flanagan actually has some answers. The ghostly horror series left a lot of its mysteries open-ended, including the truth about the two elderly spirits that seemed to haunt only Ilonka and Kevin.
